January 2025 Meeting
Date: January 8th, 2025
Presentation: Ed Cloutis, Landing on The MOON
The geology of the Moon can provide insights into the origin of the Earth-Moon system as well as the geological forces affecting the early Solar System. Ongoing exploration of the Moon by a number of nations and organizations is helping to clarify this early history. Recent discoveries include the discovery of a number of water-bearing minerals, and igneous minerals. Dating of these igneous minerals suggests that volcanoes on the Moon were active until very recently. A search is going for minerals that may come from the lunar mantle and which have been exposed at the surface by major impacts.
Febuary 2025 Meeting
February 12, 2025, Ken Fumerton, Ordovician fossils from Gillis Quarry
Part 1, Introduction to collecting at Gillis Quarry. Our guest speaker and field trip leader.
Ken Fumerton has 40+ years of experience collecting fossils in Manitoba and abroad. In this presentation he will be focusing on the Ordovician fossils that can be found at Gillis Quarry, Manitoba. This is an active quarry so the possibilities of finding new and fresh fossils are always good. Ken will monitor the progress in the pit, to see if the area they are working on, is actually producing fresh fossils. Different areas in the pit will produce different types and sizes of fossils, whether they may be corals, trilobites or Cephalopods. The fossils found here are of a high quality, well preserved and are very collectable. Sometimes, they may also contain Vugs (holes) lined with calcite or quartz crystals, which will add value to your new found specimens. If you are interested in participating in this Field Trip, register with Ken.
